Feature Matches
A full day of International Friendlies is on tap at the Lions this Wednesday, including a huge CONCACAF match between theUnited States and Mexico (6pm kick off). Starting with their most recent Gold Cup win, Mexico has established itself as the regional powerhouse. El Tri is in fine form, having won their last six in a row, and they are expected to field an experienced side led by a potent strike force of Chicharito, Guardado, Barrera, and Zavala. The U.S. on the other hand is facing an uphill battle, having never won in Mexico (0-23-1), and facing their rivals at the massive and foreboding Estadio Azteca. This match is about experience for the U.S., as Jurgen Klinsmann has chosen a youthful side, led primarily by MLS and Liga MX players. The back four looks to be the least experienced area of this U.S. squad, with Fabian Johnson taking the reins in the absence of Bocanegra and Cherundolo. There are a few familiar and experienced names in the team though, with Tim Howard, Landon Donavan, Jermaine Jones, Maurice Edu, and Demarcus Beasley all on the roster. The most glaring omission is American talisman Clint Dempsey, who has sat out the preseason for Fulham, and is not match fit for this fixture. Some U.S. players to keep an eye on are former Rapid Hercules Gomez, and MLS leading scorer Chris Wondolowski. The bottom line is, Friendly or not, this is always a classic battle. Sooner or later the U.S. will get a win south of the border, and despite this somewhat inexperienced roster, it may be tonight!
There are plenty of other terrific Friendly matches this afternoon, starting withSweden taking on Brazil at noon, Germany v Argentina at 12:45pm, and Italy taking onEngland at 2pm. MLS rounds out the day with three live matches.
The third week in August is an exciting time in football, as the 2012/13 European campaign kicks off. The Lions will open the doors at 7am Saturday morning to ring in the beginning of the English Premier League season, with the first matches set to kick off at 8am. A couple of the perennial contenders in the EPL feature in the first matches of the day, withArsenal hosting Sunderland and Liverpool travelling toWest Brom. The 10:30am match is a mouth watering affair between Newcastle and Tottenham. The Geordies are coming off a great season, and much is expected of them this year, while the Spurs have a new Manager and a familiar roster full of big name players. Every point counts in EPL, so expect a fast and furious start to the new season (EPL Preview: ). Saturday evening ourColorado Rapids are at home to Chivas, who sit a point ahead of us with three games in hand. There are some great ticket deals, and our Burgundy Boys need to grab another W, so get out in support of our hometown Club! Buses, hosted by the Bulldog Supporters Group, will be departing the Pub throughout the afternoon, and reservations can be made .
Sunday morning the Pub opens its doors at 6:15am, as the reigning European Champions,Chelsea, take on Wigan with a 6:30am kick off. This match is followed by the 2011/12 EPL Champions, Manchester City, facing recently promoted Southampton. City are clear favorites to repeat, as they have a tremendous amount of depth in their squad. Chelsea have once again splashed the cash and reloaded with a handful of young and expensive players. Sunday afternoon we have Real Madrid and Barcelona kicking off their La Liga campaigns, and coverage of these matches will largely hinge on BEIN Sports, who now hold the rights to La Liga, striking a deal with Directv. Look for an announcement on our Facebook page, and an adjusted schedule on the website, as we wait on news of the deal. We finish the weeks football on Monday with a lunchtime kick off between Everton andManchester United. The Lions will have Fish & Chips on special for $7.50 for this enticing lunchtime fixture!
