Feature Matches
This second week of October is an International break from Club football, with an entire day of World Cup Qualifiers falling this Friday. First up is a full slate of morning and lunchtime European Qualifiers. In Europe there are nine groups, with the winner of each automatically advancing to the Final. The eight best second place teams will play an additional four matches to resolve the four remaining slots, making a total of 13 qualifying nations. The Lions will be opening early Friday morning (9am) withRussia hosting Portugal to kick off our coverage of European Qualification matches. These two sides sit tied atop Group F with six points a piece, meaning this fixture will be for top of the Group. Our feature lunchtime matches pit Ireland against Group leaders Germany and England vSan Marino. Ireland began their campaign with a win, and a result at home against the Germans would be a massive boost for their World Cup hopes. England are in a tight race withPoland and Montenegro in Group H, and will look for a resounding win here to pad their goal differential. To conclude our European coverage for the day we haveArmenia facing Italy on tape delay. Italy sits atop their group, but Armenia only trails them by a point.
Leading into Happy Hour our coverage moves to South America, as Ecuador takes onChile, and Colombia faces Paraguay. Ecuador is only a point back from Group Leaders Argentina, and a point clear of their opponents Chile. Colombia has been a big surprise, also one point off the pace of leaders Argentina, and they are facing a Paraguayan side that is bottom of the table. Colombian striker Falcao has been a pleasure to watch for his Club (Atletico Madrid), and on the International stage, so expect to see some goals from him. Our final South American match of the day is a doozy, with Argentina hosting their neighborsUruguay. Uruguay knocked Argentina out of the Copa America in 2011, and had an incredible Cup run in 2010. Look for Argentina to exact revenge here, as they are the in form side, and at home.
Our feature match of the day has our very own USMNT taking onAntigua Barbuda with a 5pm kickoff. No room for error here for the U.S. Men, as they sit tied atop their Group with both Jamaica and Guatemala, with only two matches remaining in this round. Ideally the Stars and Stripes pick up the win, and pad their goal differential going into the final match of the round. It is always difficult to play in the Caribbean though, and anything less than max points here would be devastating to the United States qualifying hopes. This leads us to the next important match of the day, Guatemala v Jamaica. Both of these sides are tied atop the group with the U.S. The worst case scenario would be a tie between these two sides, leaving the USA with a win as their only option against Guatemala next Tuesday. If either side wins in this one (and the U.S. are victorious) then the pressure is alleviated somewhat going into the final game. Regardless, this will be a greatCONCACAF battle. Two other big qualifiers in CONCACAF kick off after the U.S. match, as Panama face Honduras, and El Salvador hostCosta Rica. The Panamanians book their spot in the next round with a win, while the Hondurans go top of the group if they can manage a result. Costa Rica is in a do or die situation, knowing full well a win against El Salvador would put them in prime position to qualify for the next round. Mexico also face Guyanawith a 7pm kickoff. El Tri has already qualified for the second round, while Guyana is still battling for a spot.
On the Horizon
Next week well have another round of World Cup Qualifiers in the midweek, and Club football returning on the weekend. Rapids defender Hunter Freeman will be at the Lions for a meet and greet, and to cheer on the USMNT against Guatemala Tuesday evening. Our Rapids return to action with an away game against Chivas on Saturday, that will feature a live Spanish broadcast from Three Lions.
